“What We Do” came out about 18 months before I moved to Philadelphia but I still heard it SCREAMING from car windows near Broad and Olney when I used to walk to the subway / Golden Krust near LaSalle (RIP the Golden Krust near the Olney Transportation Center). On the first warm days of the year, you’ll still hear it coming from car windows. When the sports teams do well, you’ll hear. Every time I feel good about the city I moved to, I hear it.
I’m not the guy to speak with any real authority on the city’s anthems, hip-hop or otherwise. A thing about Philly (and maybe a thing about everywhere) is that I live here, but I’m not From Here. What I do know is that every time I hear this song, it’s like hearing it for the first time.
Sadly, it is not a perfect song because Jay-Z’s verse is very bad. He’s gotta get his soul clean.
